Metal CRUSH Mafia TMR

In 2024,
we asked ourselves what kind of controller PB TAILS was still missing.
The answer that received the most votes was unexpected:
an all-black controller.
We made the first prototype, but something still felt incomplete.
It was pure, restrained, and quiet — yet it had not found its reason to exist.
So it was set aside, like a planet waiting to find its orbit.
Then, in November 2025, Steam Deck announced its all-black model.
We knew the time had come.
This co-creation project began with one focus: the middle frame.
When we asked our community for creative direction, two ideas stood out: GOTHAM and MAFIA.
Gotham—the fictional city from the stories of Batman and the Joker—became a reference point for the mood our community imagined: dark, restrained, and full of character.
We took that conversation as a starting point for our own exploration of an all-black PB TAILS controller.
Restrained on the surface. Wild within.
A darker expression of CRUSH, shaped by our community.
*References to Gotham, Batman, the Joker, and Arkham describe creative inspiration discussed by our community only. This is an independently developed PB TAILS product and is not an official collaboration with, licensed by, sponsored by, or endorsed by DC Comics or Warner Bros.

GOTHAM
is a city. MAFIA is a way of surviving it.
This city doesn’t run on law. It runs on families, territories, and silent rules.
Here, you’re not a citizen.You belong to someone.Or you’re someone’s target.

Making an all-black controller is far more difficult than it looks.
CRUSH is built from a combination of metal and plastic. The front shell is metal, the rear shell is plastic, and the buttons, sticks, and triggers all involve different materials. The challenge is that black is not a simple color. Different materials absorb, reflect, and present black in completely different ways.

Metal black can feel colder and heavier. Plastic black can appear softer or deeper. The gloss level, hue, surface texture, and even the way each part reacts under different temperatures and lighting conditions can make the “same black” look noticeably inconsistent.

So we went through rounds of sampling, comparison, rejection, and resampling. The goal was not perfect uniformity, but true visual harmony — to find the right set of parameters that allows the metal shell, plastic body, and buttons to feel like they belong to the same object under natural light.
This is not simply making a controller black.
It is making different materials disappear into the same darkness.
